I am so glad to see you're considering fasting. We as a church entered into a season of fasting and prayer on February 18 through March 25. Don't let the title of this page fool you... we are NOT encouraging people to fast for 5 weeks straight! We are simply encouraging people to consider incorporating some level of fasting into their lives each week, for 5 weeks. Jesus said His disciples would fast... that's why we fast. Its really that simple.
So, Here are some basic notes on fasting:
Do consult with your health care provider before attempting even a partial fast if you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic, or taking any medication. Taking medication while fasting can cause nausea and vomiting as well as being very harmful to your health. So do not fast if the proper effects of your medication, or your health, will be adversely affected. If you are a minor or a student in college, please consult your parents and other significant people in your life locally.
There are different types of fasting. Here are a few:
- Water fast - only drink water for a specified period of time
- Drink water and fruit juices, Kombucha, etc. - No food.
- Eat no meat, sweets, or bread - Drink water and juice. Eat fruits and vegetables.
- Partial fast - i.e., eat breakfast and lunch, and then don't eat again until breakfast the following morning.
Do start small. Maybe make your first fast a meal or a few meals; at the most go no more than 1 or 2 days.
Do let someone close to you (locally) know that you are fasting to be of assistance in case of any emergency you may encounter.
Do drink plenty of water every day.
Do use the time you normally eat to seek the Lord in prayer and reading the Word.
Don't substitute for the lack of food by turning to media, entertainment, internet, etc.
Don't eat too much or eat rich food after your fasting period. Adjust your eating portion gradually.
PLEASE, if you have any health concerns or questions, please consult a physician (and parents, significant others) before any type of fast.
